Grey kitchen cupboards
Greys that lean blue, lilac, warm or green in the makers' own words, why a grey turns blue or purple on the doors, and choosing warm or cool for your light.
Updated 29 October 2026 · The Kitchen Resprayer
The short answer
Most greys carry an undertone, blue, lilac, green or warm brown, and it often only shows once a whole run of doors is painted. The makers say which way each grey leans.
In a north-facing kitchen choose a grey its maker calls warm or stone; cool, blue-leaning greys suit south light. Grey is less chosen for whole kitchens than it was, but still common on the base units of a two-tone scheme.
Grey is several colours
Farrow & Ball says "some greys are crisp and cool", "others are warm and inviting", and some carry green. Dulux Heritage separates cool, warm and "true" greys, the true ones mixed only from black and white, while most others carry an undertone such as blue or green. Valspar splits its greys seven ways, from blue greys to grey beiges with "warming tones running through".
That lean is the thing to choose first, before light or dark. On a sample card it hides; across a run of doors it's what you see. Homeowners on Mumsnet say a grey's undertone "doesn't tend to come out until you've painted a large area".

Quoted from each maker's colour page on 29 October 2026; the 'Leans' column follows the maker's own undertone words. Only Crown's trade site prints LRV. Dulux files even its Warm Pewter as a 'Cool Neutral', so read the maker's category, not the name.
Crown's greys here span LRV 74 (Early Dawn, D1740B) to 09 (Work of Art, L7090K), the middle two digits of each code. That's nearly as reflective as an off-white at one end and close to black at the other, all sold as grey. LRV explained: the colours page.
Farrow & Ball's green greys (Mizzle, Old White, French Gray) are on the sage page; Railings, its "soft black", is with the blacks.
Why a grey turns blue, purple or brown
North light pulls it blue
Cool light can turn it lilac
Sun can turn it brown
Room size changes it
Bulbs push it
If you want a grey that holds still, Farrow & Ball says Manor House Gray "retains its colour in all lights". For the rest, the fix is choosing the lean on purpose.
Warm or cool, by the way the kitchen faces
| Your kitchen | What makers say | So look at |
|---|---|---|
| North-facing | Dulux Heritage: warm greys suit north-facing rooms. Tikkurila: grey undertones can leave it "cold and sterile". Harvey Jones: softer dove and French greys | Greys the maker calls warm or stone: Skimming Stone, Worsted, Early Dawn, Neighbourhood. Or go deliberately dark |
| South-facing | Dulux Heritage: cool greys suit south-facing rooms, where paler tones help the light | A blue-leaning grey is warmed by the sun: Dimpse, Lamp Room Gray, Bungalow |
| West, or cool evening light | Farrow & Ball: Elephant's Breath can go "almost lilac" | Sample any grey with violet in its make-up hardest |
Right-hand column: how we read the makers' advice together; no single maker says it. Dulux also notes most colours look slightly colder and darker in north-facing rooms.
Is grey dated?
Grey was the most chosen cabinet colour in Houzz's UK surveys in 2023 (21%) and 2024 (19%). In the 2026 study blue (18%) and green (17%) were ahead and grey was at 12%; Houzz says the survey changed, so the years aren't a straight comparison.
But in the same 2026 survey, among people choosing different colours for upper and lower cabinets, grey was the second most chosen for the lower half (20%). The fair reading: an all-grey kitchen is less chosen than it was; grey that leans warm, or grey on the base units with something lighter above, is still common. One Mumsnet owner's verdict on a year-old platinum grey kitchen was "my biggest regret", which is the case for choosing a grey's lean as carefully as its depth.
Grey gloss, matt and supermatt doors
A lot of grey kitchens aren't painted at all. Benchmarx sells grey in gloss, matt and supermatt (including true handleless), Magnet in gloss and matt, and Kutchenhaus in high-gloss lacquer and ultra-matt; none of their range pages gives a paint code. Howdens says gloss grey units maximise light in a small kitchen, while "a super-matt finish tones down reflections". Houzz's 2026 UK users chose handleless designs 31% of the time.
Changing the colour of those doors is a different job from repainting a painted Shaker: what they're made of decides the preparation. See painting laminate and gloss-type doors and which paint for which door, or send us two photos and we'll tell you what yours are.

Floors and accents
Houzz's 2026 UK survey, across every colour of kitchen: white (32%) and off-white (26%) worktops, wood (43%) floors, off-white (29%) walls. Grey itself was 8% of worktops and 11% of floors. Want grey with navy? Navy cupboards.
Two greys, or grey below
Dulux suggests keeping bolder shades below eye level, using its dark grey Urban Obsession as the example. Kitchen Warehouse says darker base cabinets than wall cupboards "makes sense", and suggests two shades of grey. Tikkurila puts its Surf on base cabinets with a lighter wall unit in smaller kitchens, and Farrow & Ball shows Dimpse units around a Down Pipe island. A second colour adds to the job: what a respray costs.
Matching an existing grey kitchen
A door maker's "Dove Grey" or "Light Grey" isn't a paint you can buy, and Magnet's dove grey isn't Benchmarx's. Naked Kitchens offers its own colour matching for grey; the range pages from Benchmarx, Magnet and Kutchenhaus give no code. So a new island, an end panel or a replacement door is matched to one of your actual doors. The alternative is respraying the whole run in one grey, which matches by definition.
Chips on light and dark grey
Farrow & Ball gives each grey a primer tone: White & Light Tones under Dimpse, Skimming Stone and Cornforth White; Mid Tones under Lamp Room Gray, Purbeck Stone, Worsted and Elephant's Breath; Dark Tones under Down Pipe, Plummett, Charleston Gray and Mole's Breath. A chip in a pale grey over white primer barely shows; a chip in charcoal over white shows every time, which is what a Mumsnet owner means by white primer that "really glares through".
Tikkurila says dark greys hide dirt and grime better; one UK retailer says dark units show fingerprints, dust and water marks, and Which? members found matt cabinets marked easily. Sheen: paints compared. Wear: respray lifespan.

Common questions
Because most greys carry an undertone, and the light brings it out. Farrow & Ball says north light brings out the cooler tones in a colour, and that Elephant's Breath 'can become almost lilac' in a west-facing room. Greys whose makers list violet in their make-up, like Crown's Clean Slate and Spotlight, are the ones to sample hardest.
Warm. Dulux Heritage says warm greys suit north-facing rooms and cool greys south-facing ones, and Tikkurila says grey undertones can leave a north-facing kitchen 'cold and sterile'. Farrow & Ball advises avoiding lighter colours with a blue or grey base in north light.
Fewer people choose grey for a whole kitchen than a few years ago. It led Houzz's UK surveys at 21% of cabinets in 2023 and 19% in 2024; by 2026 blue and green were ahead and grey was 12%, in a survey Houzz says changed. But grey was still the second most chosen colour for the lower half of a two-tone kitchen.
Harvey Jones says white and pale worktops are the most popular choice, with timber adding warmth to cooler greys and darker granite or quartz adding drama to a pale one. Kitchen Warehouse recommends solid wood. In Houzz's 2026 UK survey white and off-white were 58% of worktops between them.
For a cool grey, warmth: Harvey Jones names brass and aged gold, Howdens copper. For a crisp look, chrome or nickel (Harvey Jones, Kitchen Warehouse). Tikkurila pairs its warm mid grey Cloak with chrome, pewter or gold.
Many grey kitchens are gloss or supermatt slab doors rather than painted timber, and preparing those is a different job from repainting a painted door. The laminate page covers what they're made of and what sticks to them.
