Replacement kitchen doors: cost, fit and fitting

New doors on your old units: what UK suppliers charge per door, why 'standard' sizes aren't, the hinge measurements that decide whether they fit, and what else you'll need to match.

Updated 30 October 2026 · The Kitchen Resprayer

The short answer

A replacement base door costs about £33 to £80 at a common 715 x 497 mm size, depending on the finish. Fitting runs to £700 to £1,500 for a 16 to 20 door kitchen.

Before you order, measure every door and its hinge positions. "Standard" sizes differ by maker, and made-to-measure doors usually can't be returned.

What one door costs

Prices only compare at the same size, so here is one base-unit door from each supplier, at the size each actually sells.

The door price is the start. Hinges may be extra (IKEA sells them separately), drilling can cost per hole (Cut My charges £5 a hole), handles are usually separate, and delivery can be £30 to £40 on a small order at Kitchen Door Outlet until you pass £500.

MyJobQuote cost guide, updated 9 September 2026: fitters charge about £28 to £35 an hour, £45 in London. Waste removal adds about £80 to £150.

For the whole job, Bestbuilders' guide puts doors alone for a 15 to 20 door kitchen at £500 to £2,000, £1,000 to £3,000 supplied and fitted, and £2,000 to £5,000 for bespoke, in-frame or hand-painted doors.

'Standard' sizes aren't

Every brand sells a standard door, and the standards don't agree. B&Q's base doors are 715 mm high and 497 mm wide. Wickes uses 600 mm wide doors at 731 mm. IKEA's METOD doors are about 80 cm high. Homebase fits a 715 mm door on its 720 mm units, except its Hadleigh range, which uses 685 mm.

So measure the doors you have, every one of them, height and width, and order to those numbers. If your cabinets are an odd size, made-to-measure suppliers go down to tiny drawer fronts: Kitchen Door Outlet makes doors from 60 x 100 mm up to 2540 x 1200 mm.

Old IKEA kitchens are the classic trap. IKEA says its current METOD range has different dimensions from the older FAKTUM range and the two can't be combined. You can tell them apart inside the cabinet: Kitchen Door Outlet says FAKTUM side walls have two columns of holes and METOD four. For FAKTUM, you need a maker like Cut My that makes doors to fit it.

The hinge holes decide whether they fit

Concealed kitchen hinges sit in a 35 mm round hole in the back of the door, with its centre 22.5 mm in from the edge. A new door only drops onto your existing hinges if those holes are in the same place as on the old one.

Measure

Lay the old door face down. Measure from the top edge to the centre of the top hinge hole, and from the bottom edge to the centre of the bottom one. Doorfinder says taller doors often have three or more hinges, so measure every hole.

Check what the supplier drills

It varies. Kitchen Door Outlet and Doorfinder drill to your positions; Shaker2go drills the 35 mm cup but not the screw pilot holes; Kitchen Warehouse's painted doors arrive with no holes at all; B&Q's Elcot comes pre-drilled for B&Q's own cabinets.

Adjust once hung

New doors rarely hang perfectly first time. Adjusting kitchen cupboard doors covers what each hinge screw moves.

Check the rules

Cut My needs hinge holes at least 70 mm from the edge and from each other, up to five per door, at £5 a hole. Shaker2go fits two hinges up to 1000 mm high, three to 1500 mm and four above that.

What else has to match

New doors make everything next to them look older. A supplier's care guide warns that vinyl, lacquered and painted doors all change colour over time in daylight, so an end panel or plinth that was a match ten years ago won't match a new door. Vinyl colours have no RAL code to match by, either, which is why Kitchen Door Outlet sends free swatches.

Count these into the order: end panels, plinths, cornice and pelmet, drawer fronts, and the doors on any integrated dishwasher or fridge, which are sized and priced separately. DIY Kitchens lists its painted Clayton range at £57.65 for a base end panel, £48.49 for a 3 m plinth and £45.67 for 3 m of cornice, before VAT.

For the trims, see how plinths and cornice fit, and what they cost. If the panels are sound and only the colour is the problem, those are the parts a respray covers in place, so it's worth pricing both ways.

Before you drill anything

Inspect every door first

Check colour, finish and size before boring a single hole. DIY Luxury Kitchens' care guide says once a door has been altered from how it was supplied it can't be replaced.

Know the returns rule

Most made-to-measure doors can't be returned (Kitchen Door Outlet). Order a sample if you're unsure of the colour.

Allow for lead times

Kitchen Door Outlet usually delivers within two weeks; Shaker2go takes 10 to 14 working days; Kitchen Warehouse paints popular colours in 7 to 10 working days and others in 18 to 22.

Shield vinyl doors from the oven

The same care guide says vinyl doors must not go above 70C and need a heat shield when fitted next to an oven, and kettles and toasters should sit away from them. Film wraps share that limit; see kitchen wrapping.

New doors or a respray?

New doors make sense when

you want a different door shape (slab to shaker, say), the old doors are peeling, swollen or broken, or you're happy to replace the panels, plinths and cornice too.

A respray makes sense when

you like the shape of your doors and it's the colour you can't stand, your cabinets are an odd size, or you'd rather not chase a colour match across panels, plinths and appliance doors.

Common questions

For a common 715 x 497 mm base door, B&Q lists a foil slab door at £33 and Kitchen Door Outlet a vinyl shaker at £48.63. Doorfinder puts solid wood at that size at £70 to £80. Add hinges, drilling, handles and delivery. Fitting runs from £150 to £500 for up to five doors to £700 to £1,500 for 16 to 20 (MyJobQuote).

Than a new kitchen, yes: you keep the cabinets, worktops and appliances. Bestbuilders puts doors only for a 15 to 20 door kitchen at £500 to £2,000, or £1,000 to £3,000 supplied and fitted. If the doors themselves are sound and it's only the colour, a respray is the other option to price.

Respray, new doors or a new kitchen

Only roughly. B&Q base doors are 715 mm high, Wickes uses 731 mm, IKEA's METOD doors are about 80 cm, and Homebase's Hadleigh range uses 685 mm. Doorfinder calls 715 x 496 mm one of the commonest UK sizes. Measure your own doors rather than trusting a brand's word for standard.

If they're the right size and the hinge holes line up. Hinge cups are 35 mm with the centre 22.5 mm from the edge; measure from the top and bottom of each old door to the centre of its hinge holes and order to those. Some suppliers drill to your measurements, some send doors blank.

Yes, if you can measure accurately. Most of the job is measuring sizes and hinge positions, then screwing hinges on and adjusting the gaps. Inspect every door before you drill anything: a supplier's care guide says an altered door can't be replaced, and made-to-measure doors usually can't be returned.

For METOD, IKEA still sells doors. For the older FAKTUM range, IKEA says METOD has different dimensions and the two can't be combined, so you need a third-party maker such as Cut My, which makes doors to fit FAKTUM cabinets.
