Kitchen wall colours: choosing a colour to suit your cupboards

Start from the cupboards you have: the wall colours UK paint and kitchen makers pair with white, grey, navy, green, black and oak units, which paint to use, and how your light changes it.

The short answer

Choose kitchen walls from the cupboards, not the other way round. Makers pair coloured cupboards with soft neutral walls most of the time, and that's what UK renovators do: Houzz's 2026 survey found off-white the top wall colour (29%) while cupboards went blue and green.

Use a kitchen-grade, washable matt emulsion. In a north-facing kitchen, Farrow & Ball says avoid pale shades with a blue or grey base.

Walls by cupboard colour

White and cream cupboards

Tikkurila says warm white cupboards want a warm tone on the walls, cool white ones a neutral that keeps the room crisp and airy, and off-whites with cool undertones suit blue hues or a warm grey. Valspar frames bright white cabinetry with blue-grey walls. More in cream and white kitchen cupboards.

Grey cupboards

Dulux pairs light grey cabinets with white walls; Magnet puts white on the walls, splashback and worktops with dove grey. Wren suggests blush or mint for warmth, or navy or charcoal for contrast, and Tikkurila's Sea Smoke, it says, fits units in any shade of grey. More in grey kitchen cupboards.

Navy and blue cupboards

Dulux says blue cabinets look great against soft grey, warm beige, cream or white. Valspar puts white on the walls and worktops to keep blue cupboards grounded. Farrow & Ball pairs De Nimes walls with Railings cupboards. More in navy blue kitchen cupboards.

Green cupboards

Tikkurila says pair green cabinetry with neutral walls, or a subtle tan if you're unsure, and test, because green undertones shift with light and nearby materials. Dulux says sage or khaki cupboards work with neutral walls. More in green kitchen cupboards.

Black cupboards

Farrow & Ball pairs Sulking Room Pink walls with Paean Black cupboards. With black worktops, Tikkurila says a monochrome scheme is the easiest choice, and blue balances them. More in black kitchen cupboards.

Oak and wood cupboards

Tikkurila suggests Damask, a classic off-white, the taupe Illusion, or Homespun, a cool grey with blue undertones. If it's the oak you want rid of, see painting oak cupboards.

Beige and taupe cupboards

No maker read for this page gives a wall pairing for these. Their own undertone is the guide: see beige and taupe kitchen cupboards.

Lighter, darker, or the same?

Most UK kitchens go pale on the walls. Houzz's 2026 survey of 402 renovating homeowners found off-white the top wall colour at 29% and white at 18%, while the most popular cupboard colours were blue (18%) and green (17%). Valspar says bright cupboards work as long as the walls and ceilings stay light.

But it isn't the only way. Farrow & Ball says painting cupboards and walls in the same or a similar shade can look very striking, and that shades from one colour family are a shortcut to a cohesive scheme; one of its kitchens has Pavilion Gray cupboards, a Pitch Black island and Blackened walls. Dulux's middle route is one feature wall in your colour, with the rest white or neutral. For two cupboard colours, see two-tone kitchen cupboards.

The worktop and splashback link them

The worktop and splashback sit between cupboards and walls, and in the UK they're mostly pale: Houzz found white or off-white on 58% of renovated worktops and 60% of splashbacks. Magnet uses white across walls, splashback and worktops with dove grey cupboards, and Valspar uses white walls and worktops with blue cupboards. With a black worktop, Tikkurila suggests blue walls to balance it.

Two cautions. Dulux's own data sheet says its kitchen paint isn't suitable where there's prolonged condensation, so a working extractor still matters. And Crown says clean grease off the walls with sugar soap before you paint. Rawlins Paints sums up the choice: a washable kitchen-grade matt wherever the walls need wiping.

How your light changes the wall

North-facing

Farrow & Ball: northern light brings out the cooler tones in a colour, so with a lighter shade avoid anything with a blue or grey base. It suggests yellow-based whites such as New White, or going dark with Railings or Down Pipe for a cosy feel.

South-facing

Farrow & Ball: soft, pale tones on the walls make the most of the light and space.

East-facing

Farrow & Ball: light blues and greens work with the cooler evening light.

West-facing

Farrow & Ball: cooler in the morning and brighter in the afternoon; it suggests Middleton Pink or Setting Plaster.

Bulbs

Farrow & Ball suggests a neutral white bulb for the truest version of your wall colour.

Common questions

Match the undertone. Tikkurila says warm white cupboards want a warm tone on the walls, and cool white cupboards a neutral that keeps the room crisp and airy. For more colour, Valspar frames bright white cabinetry with blue-grey walls, and Dulux says bold walls work if the cupboards stay neutral.

Cream and white kitchen cupboards

White or off-white is the safe answer: Dulux calls light grey with white walls a modern and timeless choice, and Magnet suggests white walls, splashback and worktops with dove grey. For colour, Wren suggests blush or mint pastels for warmth, or navy or charcoal for dramatic contrast.

Grey kitchen cupboards

Neutrals, mostly. Dulux says blue cabinets look great against soft grey, warm beige, cream or white walls, and Valspar says blue cupboards with white walls and worktops keep a kitchen grounded. Farrow & Ball goes bolder, with Sulking Room Pink walls against De Nimes cupboards.

Navy blue kitchen cupboards

There's no rule. Most UK renovators do go lighter: Houzz's 2026 survey found off-white (29%) and white (18%) the top wall colours while cupboards went blue and green. But Farrow & Ball says painting cupboards and walls in the same or a similar shade can look very striking.

A kitchen emulsion made to be wiped. Dulux Easycare Kitchen, Crown easyclean Kitchen and Valspar Premium Kitchen & Bathroom all claim grease resistance and washability, and Valspar and Farrow & Ball's Modern Emulsion claim mould resistance. Dulux's data sheet says its kitchen paint isn't for places with prolonged condensation, so keep the room ventilated.
