Painting kitchen worktops: what works, and what to expect

Painting a laminate, tiled or wooden worktop: the paint and sealer system that's made for it, why it needs 20 days, what the heat claims really cover, and the alternatives.

The short answer

You can paint a laminate worktop with a worktop paint such as V33 Renovation Cupboard & Worktop, but it must be sealed with a clear protective coat and left 20 days before it reaches full strength.

Even then, use trivets and chopping boards. EGGER, which makes laminate worktops, advises against painting them because the paint can chip and flake.

As each maker states it, read 30 October 2026. Formica is a laminate, so the laminate row applies.

Rawlins Paints puts it plainly: only specialist products suit worktops. A cupboard paint or a general laminate paint isn't built for knives, pans and daily wiping, and V33's own data sheet says its paint must be covered with its Worktop Protection on any horizontal surface.

How to do it

Clean

Wash with a soda-based or sugar soap cleaner, rinse thoroughly and let it dry (V33). Rawlins says laminate must be thoroughly degreased with a specialist cleaner.

Key

V33's data sheet says wash and rinse laminate, and sand melamine and varnished wood lightly at 240 grit; B&Q's listing for the same paint says sand laminate at 240 too. A light key does no harm, and in The Bloke Cave's scratch test on laminate offcuts the sanded half held up better.

Paint

Two coats at 12 to 25C, 6 hours apart and no more than 12. A roller gave a better finish than a brush in The Bloke Cave test.

Seal

Once the paint is fully dry (24 hours), mix the additive into V33 Worktop Protection, stir for 5 minutes, and apply two crossed coats 4 hours apart. Use the mixed tin within 10 days.

Wait

V33 says the protection reaches its best after 20 days. No knocks, scrubbing, staining or cleaning until then.

Savoy Timber says allow a weekend at the very least for the work itself, before the cure even starts. Plan around three weeks of light use.

What it will cost

A 3 m by 600 mm worktop is 1.8 m². On V33's own coverage figures, two coats of paint fit in one 750 ml tin (about 10 m²) and two coats of protection in one 500 ml tin (5 m²). B&Q sells the paint at £40 for 2 litres, and smaller tins are available. The protection's retail price wasn't readable for this page, so check it before you start.

Heat, knives and food

Hot pans

V33's data sheet shows +100C, but labels it for a splashback. Nothing on it says a hot pan can sit on a painted worktop. EGGER says not to treat even plain laminate as heatproof: use mats or trivets.

Knives

No maker publishes a scratch or knife figure for painted worktops. EGGER's advice for laminate applies double: always use a chopping board.

Stains

V33 tested its paint against hot and cold fats, vinegar, wine, ketchup, coffee and tea. Clean it with a gentle detergent and no abrasive sponges.

Food

None of the worktop paints or resins read for this page claims to be food safe. Frenchic's Tuff Top Coat is certified to EN71-3, a toy safety standard, not a food one.

Epoxy resin instead

A clear epoxy coat over laminate is the other route people try. Easy Composites' GlassCast 3 resin needs no primer on laminate, just a key, and scratches can usually be polished out. But a self-levelling coat needs at least 2 kg of resin per m² (£12.46 ex VAT for a 500 g kit), it's touch dry in 24 hours and takes about 7 days for most of the cure, its maximum service temperature is 45C so hot pans would certainly mark it, and none of the range is certified food safe.

Osmo says sand to 120 to 150 grit and apply two coats along the grain, and that worn areas can later be re-coated without sanding. Avoid steam cleaners and harsh detergents on an oiled top.

Or don't paint it

If the worktop is chipped, swollen round the sink, or you'd rather not wait three weeks, a self-adhesive wrap or a new laminate length can cost less than you'd think. Kitchen makeover on a budget has the prices, and kitchen wrapping covers what a professional wrap costs and where film lifts. EGGER says a laminate worktop can last ten years or more when looked after.

Common questions

You can, with a paint made for worktops and a clear protective coat on top, but go in with your eyes open. EGGER, which makes laminate worktops, says it wouldn't recommend it because painted laminate is prone to chipping and flaking. V33's worktop paint lists laminate as suitable, provided it's sealed with its Worktop Protection and left 20 days to reach full strength.

V33 says its paint is fully dry in 24 hours, but its Worktop Protection only reaches its best performance and adhesion 20 days after application. Until then, V33 says treat the surface gently: no knocks, scrubbing, staining or cleaning.

Don't. The +100C heat figure on V33's data sheet is labelled for a splashback, not a worktop. Epoxy coatings are no better: Easy Composites rates its GlassCast resin to 45C and says hot pans would certainly mark it. Use a trivet, as EGGER advises for laminate anyway.

None of the paints or resins read for this page claims to be food safe, and Easy Composites says none of its GlassCast resins are certified. Use a chopping board and don't prepare food directly on a painted top. Some wood worktop oils do carry a food-safe standard, such as Osmo Worktop Oil (EN 1186).

Not with tile paint: Rust-Oleum and Ronseal both rule their tile paints out for worktops. V33's cupboard and worktop paint lists tiles among its surfaces, sealed with its Worktop Protection like any other worktop.

Painting kitchen wall tiles

Paint and seal it, or wrap it. On V33's own coverage figures a 3 m worktop needs one 750 ml tin of paint and one 500 ml tin of protection. A self-adhesive wrap film is £29.97 for 5 m at B&Q, and a new laminate worktop runs from about £70 to £110 a length.
